Ok, I admit it I went out and saw Sussical the Musical.. now, I wasn't expecting much.. but when you don't expect much and in the first 10 minutes start thinking about leaving the theater before the intermission.. you know you are in trouble.. BUt it actually turned out kind of charming.. Dr. Suess can write a great story, if it wasn't for the great Dr. Suess stories, I would have walked out of the theater very early, the Singing was bad, the music was so Clichet it can't even be said how sad that was.. The choreography was un inspired, and there were more forced jokes then an evening out with me. There is a child lead with the name Jo Jo.. they stretch it as far to make a Beatles reference when (yes she stared in it) Cathey Rigby says.. Get Back Home JO JO.. I think I was the only one in the theater who caught that one, and that shamed me.. If you are looking for an evening of milktose entertainment then Suesical the Musical is just the ticket.. One saving grace is (and I don't consider Cathey Rigby the lead) the lead woman had a really nice voice and great stage presence.. she really stole the show.. or would have if Cathy Rigby wasn't so busy trouncing over everything delicate in the show. The only inspired musical number in the whole show with interesting choreography supposedly takes place underwater.. thay had lots of black light and people with Neon painted fish and CAthy Rigby and the kid are supposedly swimming under water they are flying with harnesses... it was rather charming.. then Cathy Rigby has to re-enact her role as peter Pan and start swinging back and forth the full width of the stage doing summersaults on her harness.. distracting from the rest of the scene.. I couldn't help but giggle..
Music listened to: Front 242 Up Evil, Underworld, Metropolis compilation.
Moral of the Day: If you want to see quality musical entertainment.. avoid former Olympic gymnists
Posted by bilzabub at February 12, 2003 11:42 PMI dunno...I kinda wanted to see Tonya Harding in Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Musical...but after your review.....maybe if Nancy Kerrigan had a cameo where she got spleened by Tonya....
Posted by: Jack on February 13, 2003 12:19 PMI think it would be great because aaron carter is in it and i know he's awsome.
Posted by: SarahBeth on May 24, 2003 08:13 PMid like to see you do it better.
cathy is great.
its a kid show dummy!
So, if you were say.....seven or five years old, which obviously you are not.....but if you were, would you have liked the musical? I do believe this would not be for an adult to go to for no reason, which leads me to suspect you may be an older sibling who was dragged to the theatre with your younger brother or sister....if this is so then you need to take into consideration the parents who read your review who would like to take their kids to see it. It is not for us ADULTS, it's for our kids.....
Posted by: Genie on October 3, 2003 03:06 PMok.. first, not children were involved in this musical, secondly, I wouldn't reccomend this musicl to children of any age.. it was terrible, I think if you are going to spend the money to take a child to a theatrical expierence, make it quality, the children who were in the theater looked dejected and bored out of their minds when leaving the theater. I think that family musicals are a good thing, and there are good ones out there, look at Lion King and Beauty and the beast, yes, they are disney productions, and there can be arguments made on the merrits there..Some musicals that are geared towards Adults when they were created can actually be a great show to take the family to.. consider The Sound of Music and Bye Bye Birdie.
Posted by: bill on October 5, 2003 08:55 AMI have only listened to the CD. Not since I was involved with a version of A Christmas Carol in which the first number began "We're Having a Dickens Christmas" have I encountered an opening number where the Characters have such a silly self awareness. The lyrics just don't make sense. "When you think about Suess"??? Did they mean "When you think Like Suess"? The Who's number falls into the same trap. Everything they have is tiny. Obviously. But it is their world! Do we go around and sing about how big everything is? I'm sure glad Rosie had to come in and save this goofy musical.
Posted by: Boris on December 5, 2003 01:38 PMokay, i think we all heard the MOVIE itself sucked, so let's all move on, shall we? :D
GIVE ME CATS! ;)
I love this musical! I think it is a great musical for kids but, I would much rather see Les Miserables for the 8th time or Miss Saigon for the 2nd or even The Phantom of the Opera for the 2nd time. Luckly I am driving down to New York to see Hairspray very soon.
Posted by: Jackie on December 30, 2003 09:36 AMi just wanted to say that i agree with the kids thing but it does kind of bring out the kid in you ya know. i'm in a production of it right now and i'm playing Horton and so far it has been fun. i hope it stays that way.

Posted by: bill on March 28, 2004 07:32 PMWell, I saw Susical the Musical at Wheeling Park High School, which is the school I attend, and I thought it was wonderful, even for just High School students. I don't think I have ever laughed so hard!
